China Approves Stimulus Plan for Electronics, IT Industries

In a State Council meeting on February 18 the Chinese government approved a stimulus plan for the electronics and IT industries over the next three years through 2011, according to reports by CCTV and Shanghai Daily. Albeit without detailed implementation measures yet, the State Council meeting laid down a framework of policy directions, including three major tasks: first, improving the industry structure and competiveness through mergers and acquisitions as well as outsourcing of R&D and manufacturing, mainly in the PC sector; secondly, boosting innovation, focusing on the IC, display, and software sectors; lastly, promoting the application of products across various fields, including telecom, information service, and IT technology application. The Chinese 3G mobile communications sector is expected to benefit from increased investments and application expansion. In addition, the Chinese government reiterated its determination to stimulate the domestic demand for IT products.
